Dr. Omon Isikhuemhen:
From Forest Forager to Global Mushroom Expert
From a young age, Omoanghe Isikhuemhen—known as Dr. Omon—developed a deep connection to fungi while foraging for wild mushrooms with his family in the tropical rainforests of Esan Kingdom, Nigeria. Raised in a family of subsistence farmers, he was strongly influenced by his father, a forestry officer who instilled the belief that education was the key to overcoming poverty. As Dr. Omon recalls, “[Education] was the only way out of the ghetto.”
Today, Dr. Omon is a globally recognized Professor of Mushroom Biology and Fungal Biotechnology at North Carolina A&T State University. A respected mycologist and research leader, he has published over 124 peer-reviewed papers on topics including medicinal mushrooms, fungal biotechnology, and sustainable mushroom cultivation.
In addition to his academic work, Dr. Omon is deeply committed to community empowerment through fungi. He leads initiatives that teach mushroom farming to single mothers in Ghana, enabling them to build sustainable income and support their children's education through the power of fungal entrepreneurship.
